今という時代に、「Tシャツ」という言葉から「ものづくり」という大きなテーマを連想する人は決して多くはないはずだ。しかし、Tシャツというシンプルな素材を柱に現実を伐り拓いてきた会社がある。あくなき挑戦を果敢に続ける、他に類を見ないこだわりの国産Tシャツ専門メーカー、久米繊維工業。その活動には、色鮮やかなアイディアとともに父子の想いが織り込まれている。

まずは、会社の成立ちから教えてもらえますか？
元々この辺りは、東京本所石原町と呼ばれる場所で、職人の町でした。隅田川を渡ると、日本橋横山町と呼ばれていて、日本の繊維の約半分位を扱っていた。そんな時代に、メリヤス（ニット）職人だった祖父が起ち上げたのが、久米繊維工業の前身、久米莫大小製造所なんです。1935年ですから、今から70年ほど前の話ですね。祖父は元々は栃木県の足利という田舎から出てきて、丁稚奉公を経て職人になる。それから、独立するという流れだったみたいですね。頑固一徹な、とても職人堅気な人でした。
でも、どうしてメリヤスの繊維工場が国産Tシャツメーカーになるのでしょう。
それは、2代目である私の親父に才覚があったからなんですよ。1950年代、当時の日本では、Tシャツを着て街を歩くことなど、誰もしていなかった時代です。でも、映画少年だった親父は、スクリーンに映し出されたアメリカの文化に大分影響を受け、憧れていたみたいです。で、ある映画の中でマーロン・ブランドがTシャツを着ていた。親父はそれを見て、「これだ！」って、ひらめいたみたいです。アメ横で手に入れた米軍放出品を手本に、より良い物をと日本人に合った型紙に切り直し、縫製に改良を加え、着やすく丈夫なものに縫い上げました。でも、横山町の問屋街にTシャツを持っていったら、「何だ、こんなもん着られるか！肌着じゃねぇか」ってはね返されてしまった（笑）。そこから色々考えたみたいです。Tシャツと言っても、それが一体何なのかわからない時代です。だから、「色丸首」という名前をつけて、色も12色揃えて、それで徐々に認知度を高めていったわけです。で、着てみたら「これは楽だっ！」ってことになったんでしょうね。
なるほど、Tシャツが日常にない時代に、Tシャツを仕事にしようというのが凄いですね。
その頃、既に銘酒とかタバコとか、Tシャツの柄になりそうなもののライセンスを取っていましたからね。また、その商才を見抜いて、自分自身はいち早く引退して親父の好きにさせた祖父というのも、なかなかだったと思いますね。
久米さんはTシャツ製造の現場で育ったのですか？
はい。職住一致という環境ですね。一方ではTシャツを縫い上げている職人さんがいて、その奥では祖父母が水戸黄門を見ているといった具合です。学校から「ただいま」って言って家に帰ると、父親が電話で注文を受けていたりするのが日常の光景でした。
そうして現場を肌で見て育った、と。
はい。僕は、商人のなんたるかということに関しては、自分の家で学びました。祖父は性格的にはまさに職人。全然しゃべらない。それに対して父親というのは、逆転の発想のできる商人でもあり一級の職人でもありましたね 。元々、商社で働いて世界で活躍したいという夢を持っていた人でしたけど、やはり家業を継がなければいけなくて、夢叶わず。それで、自分が好きなアメリカ文化と下町ならではのものとを掛け合わせて、Tシャツという商売に繋げていったわけです。
久米さんご自身も、ずっとTシャツ産業の中でキャリアを積まれてきたのでしょうか？
いいえ。私は、縁でイマジニアという会社でゲームデザイナー、そして日興証券でフィナンシャルプランナーをするという数奇な道を歩んでいます。本当は、ゲームも株も嫌いなんですけど（笑）
随分と違う種類の仕事ですね。
でも、そこでは、学んだことも多かったです。子供たちは、広告に動かされてゲームを買わないということや、株をやるようなおじいちゃんやおばあちゃんが情報弱者なんかでは決してない。だから、商売する側も、ただいいものをつくればいいというのではなく、ちゃんとした情報を出す。本当に売れるものというのは、最初は全然評価されない場合もある。そういうことを学びましたね。
なるほど。久米さんの現在のユニークな取り組みというのも、そこが出発点になっているわけですね。
そうですね。オリジナルTシャツづくりをイベントにからめてやったり、アーティストと恊働したり、オーガニックコットンTシャツをつくるなどというプロジェクトは、そういう経験があったからこそ実っているものだと思います。
現在、久米さんはメーカーとしてのこだわりを非常に上手く打ち出されていますね。ご自身では、自分の会社をどう説明されますか？
ひと言で言えば、こだわりのある国産Tシャツメーカーです。ウチのTシャツは、裁断、縫製からプリントまで一貫生産されます。熟練の職人たちの手作業によって生まれるもの。そのこだわりも、素材選び、染色、カッティング、縫製、仕上げまで、きめ細やかな心配りが至るところに施されています。また、アーティストやプロデューサーとの恊働Tシャツや環境へ配慮したTシャツづくり、そしてオリジナルTシャツなど、自分たちにしかできない希有なTシャツメーカーとして、事業を展開しています。つまり、海外で量産されるTシャツとは違い、日本でこそ創り得るTシャツをつくっているメーカーだと考えています。
お父様が経営に口を出されることなどもあるのではないでしょうか？
第二創業をしてからは、基本的には任せてもらっているんです。でも、その前は、人に言うのも恥ずかしいような、些細な喧嘩は沢山ありました（笑）。Tシャツのブランドタグに「久米繊維工業」と付けたときも、「”繊維”とか”工業”とか、そんなものをタグに付けてしまって大丈夫なのか？横文字にしないでいいのか？」ということは言われましたから（笑）。
世代的な感覚の違いはあっても口出しはしない、と。
そうですね。父の時代には、繊維とか工業とか付くだけで、銀行が貸し渋りをしたりということがあったみたいですから。だから、父も口にはしても時代は変るということ自体はよく分かっていますね。
それはどんな点から感じることですか？
今も、毎朝、父とたわいもない雑談をするんです。そうすると、父は、『成功の素ファイル』というものを持っていて、それを見せてくれる。そこには、失敗したことが山ほど書かれている。取引先の会社がつぶれるときの兆候とか、予想を越える変化が起こって怖い想いをしたことなんかです。ファイルには、その時代時代にどう対応したらいいか、という商人スピリットが詰まっている。それが本当にいい勉強になりますね。
最後に、Tシャツの製造というと、どうしても中国の安価な労働力が頭に浮かぶのですが、久米さん自身は、どうお考えでしょうか？
私が考える中国というのは、工場ではなくお客さまのいる土地です。中国の約1億人は富裕層。であれば、そういう方々に、「流石、日本だ！」と言わせたられるようなものづくりができたらいいわけです。何も、むやみに怖がる必要はない。今、空港の免税店で7000円で販売しているJUST JAPANブランドのTシャツをお手伝いしています。これは是非中国の人に手にしてもらいたい商品ですね。父親がアメリカに憧れたように、中国の方が憧れるものづくりをしていきたいと思っています。
