「曲げる」「組む」「編む」という、プリミティブな作業を通さずには完成することはないのが、籐製品。この籐製品を、山形県でつくる会社が、ツルヤ商店というメーカーだ。小さい会社ながら、グッドデザイン賞を受賞するなど、伝統の技術を見事に「デザイン」と結合させている。しかも、行政や企業の力を借りずの成功。一体、どんな考えを持った社長なのか、同社社長を訪ねた。

籐製品づくりをしているメーカーが山形県にあるとは知らなかったのですが、会田さんはツルヤ商店何代目になるのでしょうか？
僕はここの4代目なんです。元々は、この辺りの山間部には、あけびとかぶどうの材料を取ってきて、我々に売る業者の人がいたんです。でも、そういう人がいなくなってからは、主にインドネシアから材料を輸入して、つくっているんですね。だから、籐製品づくりは地場産業ではないんです。山形県でも東北地方でも、私の知る限りでは、籐製品づくりをしているのは、ウチ1社だけだと思います。
籐のプロダクトというものは、ひと昔前には随分見かけましたね。
大体、昭和40年代後半以前というのは、幼児用の製品には籐製品が使われることが多かったんですよ。揺籃と呼ばれる幼児用ベッド、つまり揺り籠だとか、子供用の椅子だとかね。要するに天然素材だと、口に入っても害がないから、みんな使っていたんです。だから籐でできたインテリア製品なら、何でも買うなんていう人も多かったんですよ。昭和40年代から50年代に掛けては、ある種の籐の製品のブームだったんですよ。いくらつくってもつくっても需要に間に合わなかったんですから。
景気のいい時代があったのですね。
ところが、そういう波があると、今度は海外からの粗悪品が入ってくるようになったんです。日本が台湾なんかに、生産拠点を求めたのがそもそもの原因なんですけどね。お客さんには、その籐製品が粗悪品かどうかなんてことは関係ない。どんどん買っていく。だから、籐製品に対しての悪いイメージがついてしまったというのはあるかもしれないですね。
商品の企画開発からやられていたのでしょうか？
うちの場合は、その頃は、ほとんどが東京や大阪のメーカーの下請けの仕事でしたから、モノが売れているときは、楽でいいんですよ。でも、売れなくなると、何とかしなければいけない。それに下請けの仕事というのは、納期までにいくつの籐製品を納品してというのが延々と続くわけですから、仕事としての面白味はないんですよ。
現在は、オリジナル商品をつくっていると思うのですが、独自の商品をつくりたいと思うようになったのはいつ頃からなのでしょうか？
僕は、大学を卒業してから約2年間は、山川ラタンという会社にお世話になっていたんです。その会社は、非常にユニークなデザイン性の高い商品に特化していた会社で、社長自らもデザインについての詳しい知識があったんです。そういうところで修行をさせていただいたということもあって、オリジナルの商品づくりをツルヤ商店でやりたいという気持ちは常に持っていましたね。
ツルヤ商店さんは、独自の活動としてデザイナーと恊働していますね。
90年代くらいからデザイン展なんかに出展するようになって、賞をもらったりしたんですね。それで、山形県工業技術センターの人たちとの話合いの中で、都会生活にマッチするようなものづくりをしてみてはどうだろうか、という話が持ち上がったんです。それである人から紹介してもらったトネリコの米谷ひろしさんと組んで商品開発をできることになったんですね。デザインという部分は、本来は、職人が自らやっていたんですけど、それだけじゃやっぱりワンパターンにおちいってしまうんです。
デザイナーが地域の伝統工芸の職人と仕事をすると、軋轢のようなものが生じるケースをよく耳にするのですが、この恊働作業ではそういうことはなかったのでしょうか？
そうですね。そういうことはなかったですね。米谷さんは、師事されていた内田繁さんの事務所から独立されたばかりで、一生懸命やってくれて、その結果、国内外のいろんなメディアでもウチの商品を取り上げてもらえたんです。ウチの方からも、あんまり「籐の特性はこうだ」みたいなことを押し付けませんでした。そうすると従来のものとあんまり変らない発想しか出てこないと思ったものですから。でも、彼との仕事は非常にやりやすかったし、組ませてもらって良かったと思っているんです。だから、このデザイン性の高い商品のシリーズの発展形も米谷さんとひき続き、開発していけたらと思っているんです。
ところで、先代や先々代からはどんな教えを受けていたんでしょうか？
父や祖父からは、とにかく地道に同じことをコツコツとやっていればいいんだ。ちょっと儲かったからといって、本業以外の仕事に手を出してはいけない、そんなことを聞かされてましたね。確かに、それはそうだなあと、そのことは肝に銘じています。ただ、ひとつ言えるのは、父や祖父の時代は、放っておいても国が発展していった高度経済成長という時代背景があった。だから、その点は差し引いて考えないといけないんだろうなと思うんですね。今は、簡単に籐のプロダクトが売れる時代ではないですからね。
会田さんは、籐製品づくりのどんな点に魅力を感じるのでしょう？
籐の製品というのは、僕からしてみれば、子供の頃からずっと身近にあったものなんですよ。だから、ただでさえ、親しみが湧くというか、愛着があります。それに、籐のような手の掛かる商品づくりというのは、手づくりの職人の技術がいる。言ってみれば、細かくて面倒な、それでいて小さい商いなんです。それでいながら、本当にいいモノをつくったら、大手のように注目されることもある。そこは、本当に魅力ですよね。
でも、今のような時代では、不安になることもあるのではないでしょうか？
昔は漠然とした不安のような、危機感のようなものがあったんですけど、今はそれがなくなりましたね。60代なのか70代なのかわかりませんが、体が動くうちはこの仕事をやっていきたい。そう思うようになったんですね。今の経営状態が、決していいわけではないんですけど、そう思えるようになったんですね。
それはどうしてなのでしょう？
それは若い頃、自分が考えていたことが実際のことになってきているのを目の当たりにしているからだと思います。「もっとデザイン性の高い自社商品をつくって売れたらなぁ」という想いも実現していますし、「コンピュータの時代になって、その反動で自然素材の手づくりの商品が求められるようになるだろうな」という予想も実際のものになっています。
それは先見の明があったわけですね。
先代の時代にはもう廃業しようなんていう苦しい時期もあったけど、それでも生き延びた。だから、これからも大丈夫なんじゃないか、と。これからは僕らみたいな、地域でものづくりをする人たちは、大企業並みのものを目指さないで、小さいけどオリジナルの価値のあるものをやっていったらいいんじゃないかなぁと思っているんですよ。そうすることで、消費者ばかりじゃなくて、学生とかウチの娘たちなんかも（笑）、こういう手づくりの仕事自体に興味を持ってくれると思いますからね。
