広島県熊野町、ここは、伝統的に筆で有名な土地。長きにわたり培われた伝統技を活用し、これまでにない肌触りの化粧筆をつくり、化粧品業界という新しい舞台を切り開いた男がいる。この人物、一見呑気そうに見えるのだが、その実、斬新なアイディアは、常に彼の脳を巡っているようなのである。

髙本さんは、最初から筆の世界でお仕事をされているのですか？
いいえ。大学卒業してからは、本当は、農業でもやろうと思っとりました。でも、どうしてか建設会社に入って2年間ほど働いた後、実家の洋画筆の問屋業が忙しくなったということで、ふたりの兄の営むその会社に勤めたんですね。父は、私が学生の頃に亡くなってました。ここ、熊野という場所は、書道筆で有名なところですからね。この町以外に生まれとったら、まったく知らんかった世界でしょうね。
現在の白鳳堂は、どんな想いではじめられたんですか？
実家の洋画筆製造業の時代に、筆に対する疑問が沸いたからです。当時は、時代的に書筆も、絵筆も、化粧筆も、ものすごく需要があったわけです。だから、分業化して、省力化していった。本来の筆づくりというのは、最初から最後までひとりつくるもんなのですが、とにかく量産しようという流れの中で仕事をした結果品質を落としていきました。「本当は、こんなんじゃないはずだ」そう思って、会社を起ち上げたんですね。
じゃあ、「本来の筆」のイメージがあったわけですね？
いや、イメージなんかあるわけない。実際に使っている人の意見を聞いていくと、本来の筆というのは、道具だということがわかりました。道具というからには、使う人が満足しなければまずい。だけど、量産品だと、値段は安いのだけど、何度か使うと捨てなきゃならん。それは何か違うなー。ということで、あーじゃ駄目、こうじゃ駄目という試行錯誤の中で、工程を省いてきたものをもう一辺、工程を増やしていって、つくっていくようなことをしたわけです。
そういえば、社長なのに自身も筆づくりをされるのは、試行錯誤と関係があるんですか？
そうですね。手作業をしていて、道具や工夫のアイディアが生まれてくることも多いですよね。でも、銀行には、「社長が一日中、筆づくりをしているような会社は伸びないよ」とか言われたこともありますけど（笑）。でも、良い筆の条件というのは、やはり筆を持ったときに「ほっ」とするような感じというのがある。これは、体で覚えないとなかなか難しい。節の持っていき方とか、ナイフの向きとか、言葉では教えられないんです。でも、私自身、こういう感性を誰に学んだんだか、わからない（笑）。
化粧筆をはじめたのは、いつ頃のことですか？
1982年です。当時は、化粧筆は全くと言っていいほど確立されていなかった。あの当時の筆は、ほとんど絵筆みたいな“化粧ブラシ”だった。だから、本物の道具としての”化粧筆”で勝負できると思ったんですね。でも、化粧品業界には、固まってしまった流通構造がありましたから、そこを打ち破るのは楽じゃあなかったですね。化粧品会社に門前払いも食らいましたし（笑）。まあ、小さな下請け会社が、「自社ブランドです」って、大手メーカーに直談判するわですからね、無理もない話です（笑）。
認められたきっかけは何だったんですか？
あるニューヨーク在住の日本人メイクアップアーティスト、安藤広美さんという人との出会いがキッカケでした。と言っても、最初は、こちらが彼女のことを雑誌で見て知って、当時、留学していた甥に電話して、無理矢理探してもらったんですけど（笑）。で、何とか会えることになって商品を見せたら、ウチの化粧筆の品質に感激してくれたんです。それで、「カナダにMACという面白い会社があるよ」と紹介してくれたんですね。それで、最初は、ただ意見を聞こうと思ってMACを訪ねていったんです。すると、「こんな技術できるのか？」と驚いて、商売の話に展開していったんです。
高本さんは男性ですけど、化粧筆ユーザーの気持ちは、どうやって知ったのでしょう？
最初は、家内ですよ。それから家内の知り合い。彼女たちにモニターになってもらって、実際の意見を集めた。その後はメイクアップアーティストなど。やっぱり生の声というのは大きいですからね。そういう意味では、直接お客さんとつながりたいという想いと「通販で、いいものを！」という想い、そこに私の新しもの好きの性格が手伝って、インターネットにもいち早く1996年から取り組みました。でも、はじめた当初は、今日はひとり見に来たとか、ふたり見に来たとか、そんな感じでしたけど（笑）。
新しい発想でやっていける秘訣は何でしょう？
多分、それはお金ではない部分でしょう。僕は、お金のことをあんまり考えたことがない。アメリカのビバリーヒルズに進出したり、中国に工場出したり、やろうと思い立ったら、そのときやる。だから、行き当たりばったり、巡り合わせの助けが大きい。大失敗もいっぱいしてますよ（笑）。でも、ゼロから綿密に計画して何かやるなんてできるわけないんですよ。それに、失敗することのが、気づきが多いですよ。体験で失敗している人間は腹の据える所が違います。知識で動く人は、とにかくリスクがないようにやるけど、そんなんやたら何もできんよー（笑）。もっとも、今は息子たちがしっかりお金を含む管理をやっていますがね。
最後に今後考えていることを聞かせてください。
たとえば化粧筆を絵筆用に柄を直して売るというのは、面白いと思っとるんだよね。逆の発想でね。絵筆業界も大きいですから。絵筆メーカーとまったく違う発想で切り込んだら、面白いかもしれないですね。後は、海外でももっとブランド名を広めていけたらいいですね。
